Bloomfield College Students are Finalists in Nationwide Media Awards for Work on WBCR

Bloomfield College has just announced seven students from the College’s WBCR internet radio station have been nominated for two national radio awards by the Interscholastic Broadcasting System (IBS) competition.

The students’ radio station work is recognized in the “Best Celebrity/Artist Interview” and “Best Special Show” categories. The students include Rayne Russell, Anthony Shields, Dayanara Manon, Charon Jenkins, Olivia Randolph, De'sia Jett, and Taheer Allah. Every year the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (founded in 1940) honors the best and the brightest among college and high school media. The event will be held in March at the 80th Annual International Conference in New York City.

"I'm so proud of the Bloomfield College students who produce content for WBCR.  These two nominated shows mirror their research, interviewing and production skills,” shared WBCR Faculty Advisor, Doug Doyle.  “It's very rewarding because the celebrity interview show focused on Bloomfield College alumnus Darren Fisher who took several radio classes while on campus.  The students also poured their hearts into the IBS finalist ‘Genius of Stan Lee’ specialty show which aired the night of Lee's death.  They quickly put together a thoughtful and entertaining show for everyone to enjoy."

This occasion marks the second time the College has been recognized in the IBS Awards Competition. In the 2017-2018 competition, students Zach Brown and Stephanie Valdiviezo were nominated in the Best Public Affairs Show and Best Interview categories. Both Brown and Valdiviezo, who have since graduated from the College, won their respective categories.

WBCR, the Bloomfield College internet radio station, is non-commercial and educational. It is student operated and funded by the Communication Program as a laboratory to train communication students and others interested in radio operation and management. The mission of the station is to provide the college and larger community with a format that is varied and informative and includes but not limited to music, news, and educational programs.
