Jasmine Mans to Headline Poetry from the Margins at Bloomfield College

On Tuesday, February 20, Bloomfield College will host Poetry from the Margins at 2:15 p.m. in the Shelby Art Room. The event will feature a poetry performance by spoken word sensation, Jasmine Mans.

A Newark native and graduate of Newark Arts High School, Jasmine received her BA in African-American Studies (Black Theory & Literature) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and is the recipient of the Star Ledger – NJPAC; Arts Millennia; and (New York) Knicks Poetry Slam Scholarships and awards.

She is a breakout poet thanks to her powerful, topical poems about black life in America. She has been featured on HBO’s Brave New Voices, BET, and billboard.com. Her poetry is no stranger to internet streaming. After she posted herself performing her poem critiquing Nicki Minaj as a role model on YouTube, it received more than 400,000 hits and sparked multiple online debates.

Poetry from the Margins acts as a precursor to the College’s Writing from the Margins, scheduled for March 22-23, and featuring keynote speaker, Sonia Sanchez.
