Guys and Dolls (as a fully staged concert)

Fri           August 30, 8pm

Sat          Oct. 1st,  8pm

Sun        Oct. 2nd, 3pm

Frank Loesser's celebrated musical comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the bright lights of Broadway.

Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls, is an oddball romantic comedy which is set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City.  Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

New Jersey School for the Dramatic Arts (NJSDA) presents

Spring Awakening

Fri Jan 6th, 8:00pm
Sat Jan 7th, 8:00pm
Sun Jan. 8th, 8:00pm

Based on Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking and controversial play (once banned in Germany), Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s brilliant rock score and searingly emotional book take the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century.

It’s 1891, and grown-ups hold all the cards. Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each other’s’ arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society. With only each other for guidance, this group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way. An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion, Spring Awakening fuses issues of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch.

James and the Giant Peach

Fri Jan. 27th, 8pm
Sat Jan. 28th, 2pm
Sat Jan. 28th, 8pm
Sun Jan. 29th, 2pm

Directed by Corinna Sowers Adler | Musically Directed by Deborah Martin

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach… and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach – among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities – but, after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building.
A delightfully offbeat adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure!

4th Wall Theater
for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf (staged reading)
Thurs Feb 16th 7:30pm
Fri Feb 17th 7:30pm

4th Wall Theatre will celebrate Black History Month with a Two night only, play reading of:
"for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf"
by Ntozake Shange, and directed by Gwen Ricks-Spencer

A black woman explores seven facets of herself and emerges a stronger person in Ntozake Shange's "choreo-poem." The piece is a series of 20 separate poems choreographed to music that weaves interconnected stories of love, empowerment, struggle and loss into a complex representation of sisterhood. The cast consists of seven nameless African-American women only identified by the colors they are assigned. Shange wrote for colored girls.... in a way that mimicked how real women spoke so she could draw her readers' focus to the experience of reading and listening. The show was nominated for a Tony Award in 1976.

Book and Lyrics by Brian Hargrove

Music by Barbara Anselmi

In the history of totally insane wedding days, this one takes the cake. It's the Steinberg wedding. The bride is Jewish. The groom is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature, his mother is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. And when the bride's ex-boyfriend crashes the party, the perfect wedding starts to unravel faster than you can whistle "Here Comes the Bride!" Plots are hatched, pacts are made, secrets are exposed - and the sister of the bride is left to turn a tangled mess into happily ever after in this musical comedy for anyone with parents.

This new musical ran on Broadway in 2015, directed by David Hyde Pierce and starring Tyne Daly.
