The best and brightest students of the Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing were inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing’s Iota Alpha Chapter in a morning ceremony at William Paterson University on December 3.

The day also marked the 30-year anniversary of Sigma Theta Tau’s Iota Alpha Chapter at William Paterson University.

In order to be inducted into the invitation-only organization, students and faculty members must demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential.

Bloomfield College students Maritess Balmater, Alexandra Milan Cicchetti, Brian Diaz, Alisha Ann Dixon, Stephanie Landaverde, Stephanie Michelle Miller, Zamel Mitchell, Kajal Patel, Jean Richmond, RN, Dennis Rubio, and Paola Ivonne Sandoval, RN received the prestigious honor during the two-hour event.

Future and current nurses listened intently to keynote speaker, Dr. Mildred Kowalski PhD, RN, NE-BC, as she presented, “A Reflection of the Past, a Lens into the Future of Nursing Research 1986-2016.”

Dr. Kowalski looked at trends in healthcare and the changes in the nursing profession and research that have taken place over the last 30 years.

“A lot has changed,” said Dr. Kowalski. “What remains the same behind all of these innovations is the individual – the nurse. The compassion and the holistic nature of our profession has not changed.”

Founded in 1922, Sigma Theta Tau, meaning “love,” “courage,” and “honor”, is currently the second-largest nursing organization in the world with more than 130,000 members spanning 90 countries.

Resources for members include scholarly nursing speakers, Nursing Research Day, the chance to travel from coast-to-coast for sponsored conferences, fundraising events, community outreach projects, networking opportunities, and an interactive website with scholarship and educational opportunities, career tools, and publications and periodicals.

Lorraine Flood, MSN, RN, Faculty Advisor, Sigma Theta Tau, initiated the collaboration between the two New Jersey institutions in 2012.

“The faculty and staff of the Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing are extremely proud to be inducting our fifth cohort of nursing students,” expressed Flood. “Congratulations to our faculty and staff who serve not only as educators, but as role models of the professional nurse.”
