Bloomfield College students and staff came together to play for a worthy cause on Mar. 19, as the institution’s Center for Student Leadership and Engagement (CSLE) and the Haitian Student Association hosted the second annual “Score 4 Haiti” charity basketball game in the school’s gymnasium.
All proceeds from the event totaled a $1,219 donation to Foundation for PEACE, an organization dedicated to working with people in materially impoverished communities in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Kenya to provide educational support, healthcare access, and economic opportunity.
“This event hits particularly close to home for me, so it is great to see such a turnout for this event,” CSLE assistant director Bado Alverna said of the festivities. “I am Haitian; my cousin sent me a text at exactly 6:04 telling me about the earthquake in Haiti, which is why the number ‘4’ is in our logo. To have our community support tonight’s event this way means a great deal to me, and to the Haitian Student Association.”
The evening featured prize giveaways, dance performances by student organizations during the contest’s halftime intermission and the charity game played by Bloomfield students, bringing a capacity crowd one of the spring semester’s best events while helping to aid a recovering nation.
“It is always so wonderful when our students get behind a cause, and put their all into helping raise money,” CSLE director Jennifer Troxell said. “That, to me, is what makes student engagement so powerful. Our students are the reason this event was this big of a success, so they should be extremely proud of the work they have done. We’re already looking forward to a great event next year.”
