Accounting, Business, CIS and Economics
Dr. Mary Ann DiLiberto, Professor of Economics was invited by Emily Ryan, Education manager of the New York Times to join her on April 18 at Pace University where she copresented a faculty workshop on sharing experiences teaching with The New York Times. Her presentation “Teaching Using ‘Real Life” Examples from The New York Times”, was based on her presentation last fall at the Northeast Business and Economics Association Conference.

Education
On Saturday, April 28, 2012, Dr. Cheryl Evans performed her one –woman show, “Holding the Pearl of Great Price” for the Bethany Baptist Church Deaconess Retreat at Hamilton Inn in Florham Park, NJ.

Dr. Nora Krieger attended the AERA conference in Vancouver, British Columbia in April. As part of the preconference activities, she was a member of a panel at the Invisible College for Research on Teaching. Dr. Krieger was a member of a panel discussing “Judging the Quality of Teacher Education.” Other members of the panel were Dr. Stefinee Pinnegar from Brigham Young University and Dr. Cheryl Craig from the University of Houston.

Instructor Kenneth Kunz’s essay on Behaviorism and Literacy Instruction in Classrooms was recently published in the 2nd edition of Lenses on Reading by Diane Tracey and Lesley Morrow. Instructor Kunz recently attended the annual International Reading Association Conference in Chicago and met with literacy experts in the field to discuss pre-service programs of distinction and current research. He also met with Brod Bagert, a renowned poet for teachers, who described his new MUSE Project, inspired by Bloomfield student Toria Avigliano.

Instructor Kunz is also currently running for vice-president of the New Jersey Reading Association (NJRA) as a representative of Bloomfield College. He has also recently completed the requirements for New Jersey certification as Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction of public schools.

Humanities
Professor of Religion, Dr. Glen Hayes is editing a second volume of the Oxford Journal of Hindu Studies (the first was completed last year) which will also include his own essay on using cognitive science in the study of religion. He also had an essay and translations from a yoga text published in Transformations and Transfer of Tantra in Asia and Beyond (de Gruyter, 2012) and contributed a book review to the Journal of the History of Sexuality. His online bibliography on Hindu Tantra will go “live” later this year at Oxford Bibliographies Online (aboutobo.com). He has been organizing a panel on cognitive science and the study of religion for the annual conference of the American Academy of Religion, and was recently invited to serve as a reader for a dissertation out of Murdoch University in Australia dealing with the uses of Asian religion on sustainability projects.

Dr. Laura Hill, Assistant Professor of History, presented the paper Frontiers in Corporate Responsibility: Black Power’s Confrontation with Eastman Kodak at the Organization of American Historians April, 2012 conference in Milwaukee.

Associate Professor of English Martha LaBare was the chairperson at the inaugural meeting of New York’s chapter of Congers, a free speech and debate society founded in England in 1755. The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) initiated the program and Nathaniel Towsen (John’s son) opened the debate. Meetings are the first Wednesday of the month at Prof. Thom’s Bar on 2nd Avenue in New York. All are welcome; see Martha LaBare for details.

Natural Science and Mathematics
On Friday, April 13, 2012 a group of students attended the 3rd annual GS-LSAMP Research Symposium at Rutgers, Newark. The students presented three posters each from Dr. Jim Murphy, Dr. Tammy Castro and Dr. Maria Vogt’s lab courses. Dr. Maria Vogt also gave a lecture during the Plenary Luncheon.

Dr. Jim Murphy and students, Katherin Aumann and Angie Yoshizu presented two posters at the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium Annual Academic Year Followhship Poster Session on Friday, April 27, 2012. The work was funded by NASA.
